Kandy is The Capital of Central Province

Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and the capital city of the Central Province. It is well known for its cool climate, rich history, ancient traditions, religious values, traditional arts, Kandyan dance, music, local food, and traditional clothing.

The city is home to Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist temples in the world.

Kandy is also famous for the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, a spectacular cultural and religious festival featuring traditional dancers, drummers, decorated elephants, and fire performers.

Today, Kandy remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, attracting both local and foreign visitors from around the world.

Kandy holds a special place in the history of Sri Lanka as the last Sinhalese kingdom of the country. In ancient times, it was known as “Senkadagala Pura” and served as a well-protected royal capital for many years.

From the 16th to the 19th century, the Kandy Kingdom resisted Portuguese, Dutch, and British invasions, helping preserve the independence of the island for a long period.

In 1815, through the Kandyan Convention, the Kandyan Kingdom was handed over to the British, marking the end of the Sinhalese monarchy in Sri Lanka.

Today, Kandy is considered the cultural heart of the country and is world-famous for Sri Dalada Maligawa and the grand Kandy Esala Perahera festival.
